As
a student in Jamestown Community College's Artisan
program, Terry Saye discovered his artistic passion in turning
burls, the growths found on trees. Turning burls is
the rare art of uncovering the hidden forms and shapes in
these unpredictable pieces of wood. Mother Nature provides
the inspiration for the artist's work, from wooden roses
and cattails, to intriguing bowls and vases, to free-form
sculptures.
His talent emerged early, when the pre-school woodworker
cut the legs off his Mother's bed (she still has his
Handy Andy toolkit). In Junior High, he discovered
a passion for the lathe while creating a table with
intricate tunings, and he continues pursuing his passion
today, supporting his artistic projects by building
custom furniture and performing the most delicate and
demanding antique repairs.
If you have a taste for the eclectic or exotic, if
someone tells you "it can't be made" or "it's
beyond fixing"
check with Terry. Chances are, his shop will be your
final stop.
